Walleye are still hanging along Unity Island, but the bite has been hit or miss for shore anglers. Boaters can find bass throughout the upper river, but some consistently productive spots include upriver of Strawberry Island, around Strawberry and Motor Islands and along the southwest side of Grand Island. Upper river smallmouth bass fishing is picking back up as post-spawn fish move back into deeper water. Bass and catfish are in low abundance in the other Erie tributaries due to very low and clear conditions. Nightcrawlers, raw shrimp, cut bait and prepared baits on a bottom rig are good offerings. Downstream of Route 20 is a top section, but catches have been reported as far up as Gowanda. It is also prime time for channel catfish in the Catt. Wooly buggers and streamers are productive for fly anglers. Spinning anglers do well with spinners, jigs with twister tails and surface lures. See Walleye Fishing on Lake Erie page for more info.Ĭattaraugus Creek is still holding good numbers of smallmouth bass and anglers report solid action from the mouth up into Zoar Valley. Walleye fishing is improving around the Buffalo Harbor and breakwall gaps at night. Though the night bite has tapered off a bit, anglers are still catching decent numbers of walleye around the popular early season shoals. Trolling or bottom-bouncing are good tactics. In most locations, catches are coming off the bottom in 30-60 feet of water. Anglers have had to work hard to put a couple fish in the cooler. The daytime walleye bite on Lake Erie has been slow to get rolling. Adult accompaniment is required for all youth participants. Fishing rods are available to borrow or bring your own. Participants to learn about fish species, basic fishing skills and equipment at the education stations, followed by fishing in the park lake. At this event, no fishing license is needed to fish.
